Bumthang Valley

Bumthang, often referred to as the “spiritual heartland of Bhutan,” is a district in central Bhutan known for its stunning valleys, sacred monasteries, and rich cultural heritage. Comprising four main valleys – Chokhor, Tang, Ura, and Chhume – Bumthang offers a serene escape into the heart of Bhutanese spirituality and tradition.

Key Attractions in Bumthang:

  • Jambay Lhakhang: Jambay Lhakhang, built in the 7th century, is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan. Its unique architectural design and the annual Jambay Lhakhang Drup festival, featuring the famous “Mewang” fire ceremony, draw pilgrims and tourists alike.
  • Kurjey Lhakhang: Kurjey Lhakhang, with its three temples, is dedicated to Guru Rinpoche, who subdued a local demon here. The main temple houses the imprint of Guru Rinpoche’s body on a rock, making it a revered site for Buddhists.
  • Tamshing Lhakhang: Tamshing Lhakhang is known for its ancient murals, some of which were painted by the great treasure revealer Pema Lingpa. The temple is a center for Nyingma Buddhism, and its vibrant annual festival, Tamshing Phala Choepa, attracts devotees.
  • Lhodra Kharchu Dratshang: Lhodrak Kharchu Dratshang was built by Lama Namkhai Nyingpo and is located on a forested slope overlooking the Chamkhar town. The original monastery is in Lhodrak in Tibet, close to the border in Lhuntse. It houses monks and above the temple are retreat centers for meditation. It has wonderful paintings of Guru Rimpoche’s life and other statues.
  • Jakar Dzong: Overlooking the Chokhor Valley, Jakar Dzong, also known as the “Castle of the White Bird,” is an imposing fortress with a fascinating history. It houses administrative offices, a regional monk body, and an observation tower with panoramic views.
  • Mebar Tsho (Burning Lake): Mebar Tsho is a sacred site associated with Pema Lingpa’s legendary discovery of sacred treasures. The serene lake is known for its spiritual significance, and visitors often witness butter lamps floating on the water during auspicious occasions. 
  • Tang Valley: Explore the picturesque Tang Valley, known for its scenic beauty, traditional farmhouses, and the Tang Ugyen Choling Palace. The valley offers a serene environment for nature walks and cultural immersion. 
  • Ura Valley: Ura Valley, one of the lesser-explored valleys in Bumthang, is characterized by its charming village of Ura and the Ura Lhakhang. The valley provides a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the region. 
  • Bumthang Cheese Factory: Visit the Bumthang Cheese Factory to witness the production of traditional Bhutanese cheese. The factory is known for its yak cheese, and visitors can learn about the cheese-making process.
  • Red Panda Brewery: For those interested in local beverages, the Red Panda Brewery in Bumthang offers a chance to taste and learn about traditional Bhutanese beer brewing.
